A Niagara Mountainside TR Success Story

NMTS worked with a client who lived independently with assistance from the daughter and, on occasion, other family members. Upon initial assessment, the client’s goal was to maintain and/or increase strength and mobility so s/he was able to visit the family cottage the following summer. Therapeutic Recreationist, Denise, would visit twice weekly to provide a seated exercise program to promote strengthening and mobility, while respecting and encouraging the client’s independence.

The client did visit the cottage a number of times the following summer. As well, during the interactions with the client, information regarding some unknown health concerns were expressed and communicated to the client’s daughter, resulting in increased quality of life and (possible) reduction in pain and suffering.

Many times, a Therapeutic Recreationist’s relationship with their clients are casual yet trusted. Clients may relate information, memories or feelings they may not feel comfortable sharing with others. Interactions are often multi-faceted and will span over more than one domain. In the above example, even though the client’s main objective was in the physical domain, social, emotional and cognitive domains were integrated into the interactions.
